Chris Christie Campaigns with Scott Walker in Wisc

New Jersey governor Chris Christie campaigned with Wisconsin governor Scott Walker in Green Bay Tuesday ahead of Walker’s June 5th recall election. Office Stand-Alone Programs

The embattled governor is being subjected to the recall petition after signing a bill last year that curtailed collective bargaining rights for most public employees. It resulted in widespread protests in Madison, as well as the campaign for his recall. Walker is the first governor in the state’s history to face a recall.

Christie said he traveled to Wisconsin in the middle of his state’s legislative session to “stand with two incredible friends,” referring to Walker and his wife Tonette. Christie is also the vice chairman of the Republican Governors’ Association.

Christie said Walker was under pressure to dump his controversial legislation, but he “never seriously considered it” and he wanted to put the “interests of all the people in Wisconsin ahead of a narrow group…whether they voted for him or not.”

“Too many politicians worry about the next election first,” Christie said at a fundraising luncheon of Walker supporters.

Walker was heavily criticized by the teachers’ unions in his state for supporting merit pay and rejecting last in, first out hiring policies, along with the rejection of collective bargaining. Christie has also battled with his state’s teacher unions, but he supports collective bargaining.

Last March, according to the New Jersey Star Ledger, Christie told a town hall in Hillsborough, NJ that “liberals in the media” were at fault for comparing the way his state and Wisconsin dealt with unions and said he backed contract negotiation through collective bargaining.

In Green Bay, Christie predicted a Walker win on June 5th and said that victory will “not only empower him to continue to do the things to move Wisconsin forward,” but said it will also send a message to other politicians “all over the country.”

He said despite the uproar in the state, which has outside groups on both sides of the aisle flooding Wisconsin with millions of dollars (Walker raised a stunning $13 million in just the last three months), he wasn’t going to “back off” or “take the easy course.”

“He’s not complaining,” Christie said. “He’s re-doubled their efforts.”

“We have an obligation…to have our voices be heard,” Christie said. “We as Americans love to judge, we do….We will be judged too by our children and grandchildren and what will we have them say of us? That we said the problems are too big…so instead we are going to bury our head in the sand?”

Christie continued, giving his predecessor in the New Jersey governor’s office a dig: “Well let me ask you a question, you really think Wisconsin would be back to where it is now if Gov. Doyle was the governor?…Come to New Jersey, would we be the way it is today if we had elected Jon Corzine to another term?”

Although Christie tops many “veepstakes” lists and Monday he said the presumptive GOP nominee might be able to “convince” him to join his ticket there was no vice-presidential discussion, except a subtle reference when the mayor of Green Bay introduced both Walker and Christie calling them “two governors destined for the White House one day,” to cheers from the crowd.

Walker addressed the crowd as well praising Christie and asking them for their vote in five weeks.

“We are turning things around and we are moving Wisconsin forward,” Walker said. “We didn’t raise taxes to balance our budgets, we didn’t have massive layoffs…we avoided that.”

He defended his legislation that led to the recall effort saying Exchange Server Key, “We thought more about the next generation than the next election and isn’t that what you elected us to do?”

Like Christie Windows 7 64 bit key, Walker said if he is victorious next month it will not only send a message to Madison, but to “statehouses all across the country” that it’s “time to stand up and look at the next generation.”

In a lighter moment, Christie said he is not just close with Walker, but their wives and children are friends as well. Christie got a laugh when he said his 16 year old daughter Sarah “likes” Walker’s teenage sons and in a moment sure to embarrass the teenager recounted how she “begged” to join her father on his trip to the Badger state.

Christie also headlined a rally in Oak Creek , Wisconsin with Walker Tuesday.

The tough talking governor will head to D.C. later this week to address the Cato Institute’s biennial dinner and will headline the Kentucky GOP’s Lincoln Day Dinner later this month as well as speak at CPAC Chicago next month.

Fed’s Dudley urges more global policy coordination

May 8, 2012 (Reuters) — The U.S. Federal Reserve’s new inflation target is an example of the kind of steps policymakers globally should take to bolster cross-border coordination and stabilize the economy, an influential Fed official said on Tuesday. Federal Reserve Bank of New York CEO William Dudley makes remarks at the Bretton Woods Committee International Council conference in Washington, September 23 cheap replica watches, 2011. REUTERS/Jonathan Ernst

William Dudley, president of the New York Federal Reserve Bank replica watches, did not address U.S. monetary policy beyond saying that the 2 percent inflation target, announced in January, shows the Fed will only take action such as purchasing bonds as long as it is consistent with its policy goals.

Still, macroeconomic policies are often too narrow in their focus and can ignore effects beyond national borders, such as on the trade balances of foreign countries, Dudley said in remarks prepared for delivery to a Swiss National Bank-International Monetary Fund conference in Zurich.

He pointed to the inflation target as a positive step toward transparency that can help policymakers outside the United States anticipate the economic and financial fallout in such an interconnected world.

“In doing so, the Fed is also continuing to underscore that actions such as our purchase of U.S. government securities are driven exclusively by our monetary policy goals, and that these policy actions will not continue beyond the moment they become inconsistent with our dual mandate objectives replica watches,” Dudley said.

“In general, policymakers should strive to ensure that we have both fiscal and monetary policy frameworks that are transparent and viewed as credible and durable.”

Dudley is a close ally of Fed Chairman Ben Bernanke and, as head of the Fed’s New York regional bank, has a permanent vote on policy actions. He said better cross-border coordination, in general, is warranted.

“(T)he issue for policymakers is whether the policies we put in place will allow adjustments to occur in a way that is consistent with a stable global economy, high levels of employment, and low inflation,” Dudley said.

“In macroeconomic terms, the prospects for achieving a more cooperative solution can be enhanced by policy transparency so that the policy goals and reaction function of each authority can be well understood by others.”

As steward of the world’s largest economy, the Fed’s policy actions typically have larger impacts relative to the actions of other central banks.

The Fed’s ultra-low interest rates since late 2008 have kept pressure on the U.S. dollar, the world’s reserve currency, often hurting non-U.S. exporters. The Fed expects to keep rates “exceptionally low” through late 2014.

In another effort to battle the recession, the Fed’s purchases of some $2.3 trillion in long-term securities in the last few years have helped keep U.S. Treasury yields low.

The Group of 20, for instance, has long discussed better coordination in dealing with global trade imbalances. However, national central banks still largely conduct policy independently.

Boehner and Pelosi Clash Over Obama’s Gay Marriag

The top two House leaders differed in their response to the president’s support of gay marriage, with House Speaker John Boehner maintaining his support for traditional marriage while Democratic Leader Nancy Pelosi praised Obama for advancing civil rights.

“I believe that marriage is the union of one man and one woman,” Boehner, R-Ohio, told reporters at his weekly news conference. “The president and the Democrats can talk about all this all they want, but the fact is the American people are focused on our economy and they’re asking the question, ‘Where are the jobs?’”

“We are going to continue to stay focused on what the American people want us to stay focused on,” Boehner said. “The American people are concerned about our economy…  That’s why you’ve seen us focused, over the last year and a half, on jobs and cutting spending, because our debt and our deficit are like a wet blanket hanging over our economy.”

Pelosi, D-Calif., said the news was “quite historic” that “spoke to the values of our families Tattoo Guns, the values of our faith and the values of our country.”

“All of us — America’s children and families and workers — saw history being made right before their very eyes, the president of the United States advancing civil rights in our country with his statement,” Pelosi said. “It was moving, it was historic, and it was a great day for our country. It honors the ideal of equality, which is the hope and heritage of our country.”

Pelosi said it was “hard” to gauge whether Democrats would win or lose votes over it in Republican districts or among Catholics and African-American Evangelicals Eyebrow tattoo supply, but she called the president’s decision to go public with his new position “the right thing to do for our country.”

“We come here to do a job for the American people, not to hold a job, and I think what he did was to advance the cause of civil rights in such a personal as well as presidential way that it’s more important than any political consequences Tattoo Steel Machines,” she said. “This is an issue that I brought with me to the Congress that I care about very much.”

Pelosi added that gay marriage is now “a conversation that we can now have more fully because the president of the United States has spoken out on it” and she is hoping Republicans “join the bandwagon.”

“What the president did was — whatever the timing and the rest — was an attempt to unify and not divide, and our statement from the [Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee] and from me had nothing to do with money, nothing to do with money,” she said. “Anything about the politics is incidental. I don’t think that this is political at all.”

Pelosi said her Catholicism “compels” her “to be against discrimination of any kind in our country” and “it’s a matter of time” before gay marriage is legalized.

“I consider this a form of discrimination. I think it’s unconstitutional, on top of that,” Pelosi said. “What we want to do is shorten the difference between the inevitable and the inconceivable. And I think the president went a long way in doing that yesterday.”

Dispatch From the ‘Mommy Room’

I was trolling Facebook on my phone and sloppily dribbling breast milk onto my skirt when I first saw the Time magazine cover asking me if I’m “mom enough.” On the one hand, the breast milk confirmed I am, indeed, a mother. On the other, the question, with its sassy little adverb, and the picture of the model on the cover tidily feeding her toddler, hinted that maybe I’m not the right kind of mom.

I’ve been working at a magazine for the past couple of months, covering for an editor who is on maternity leave. When I started coming in-office, Amalía was six months old, so she was already eating puréed fruits and veggies and snacking on rice crackers. But I was also breastfeeding her, and still am. So once or twice a day, at my appointed time, I leave my desk in the open-plan office and sidle off to the “Mommy Room,” where seven other women and I take turns expressing milk. Every half hour, from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. is accounted for, our names written in marker on a whiteboard on the wall.

Last weekend, Amalía, her grandmother and I visited my sister in San Francisco. The trip was great; we saw redwoods and tasted wine and ate lavishly and caught up with old friends. But we took the red-eye back, and there were some casualties. A certain moo-ing cow never made the flight. We left a few infant socks in our wake. And, in my half-awake stupor my first day back at the office, I somehow lost, or threw out, one of the bottles that goes with my breast pump.

So yesterday I was pumping into a bottle off of one breast, and into a water-glass off of the other. I tried to tell myself I was MomGyver, making things work on limited resources. But what I was really making was a mess. And then Time magazine had to get all up in my face to ask if I was breastfeeding enough or looking good enough while doing it. Right after that French “feminist” decided that breastfeeding was setting back the women’s movement and reducing me to self-chosen slavery. And it just makes me wish that everyone would get their minds off my nipples.

I like reading online gossip in the Mommy Room while I pump, and cuddling with the baby when I feed her (except when she bites me, that’s not such a delight). I thank my lucky stars that I can do it — those and the no-nonsense lactation consultant who taught me how, and the supportive husband who dragged me to her after I burst into tears not being able to figure it out on my own. I’m really glad I’m breastfeeding. But if you’re a mom, too, and you want to do it for longer than I do or for less time than I do BCBG Dresses sale, that’s your business. I’ll mind mine if you mind yours. If only everyone else would follow suit. For Mother’s Day, what would be really nice is if everyone would stop telling those of us in the proverbial Mommy Room that we’re doing this mom thing wrong one way or the other and just let us do it.

Two weeks ago I went to a wedding, the first one I’ve attended since Amalía was born. And when the beaming bride walked in with her parents, my husband turned to me and said, “Someday that will be us.” I had been thinking the exact same thing, that I hoped someday someone would love my daughter as much as I do, that she would have everything she wanted, whether that was a partner and a family or a chance to travel footloose and fancy free (but with a wi-fi device that allowed her to email her parents frequently).

Weddings used to make me think about my own plans and desires. Now a happy future for Amalía is the thing I want most in the world — that and a chance to watch it unfold. I’ve never felt more like a mother than I did then, when I realized my first thought was now for her.

As my first Mother’s Day approaches Cheap Herve Leger gown, I want to thank Amalía for making me a mom. And to tell Time magazine, and Elisabeth Badinter, and everyone else who thinks I’m doing it wrong, that I’m being the best one I can. And so are the other moms I know. And I think that’s more than enough.

Pollsters reveal the 2010 Cadillac CTS Wagon

Image removed at request of its owner, General Motors

A Jalopnik reader purportedly got hold of a Harris Opinion Survey about the upcoming CTS wagon, and assuming it’s on the level Tattoo Supplies, it brings forth a treasure trove of information. For example, as you can see above Tattoo Supplies, it seems we now have a first look at official imagery of the CTS in 2-box guise. We like what we see…perhaps even more than we like the CTS Coupe. We especially dig the way those super-tall taillamps look from behind. We’ll reserve final judgement for whenever Cadillac officially unveils the car, but things appear to be proceeding very nicely.

Underhood, the doc tells us that it’s going to be direct-injected engines only. A 3.0L V6 producing 260 horses replaces the current, non-DI 3.6 as the base mill, with the now-familiar 304-horse 3.6L again assuming the top spot. Both will be connected to 6-speed automatics, and highway mileage is said to be 27 mpg. 25 cubic feet of your stuff will fit behind the second row, and if you flip those back seats down, cargo capacity increases to 58 cubes. A power liftgate ensures you won’t strain yourself opening the rear hatch. According to the leaked materials, pricing will range from $37,500 to $42,500.

Will Americans embrace a new luxury wagon? We’re gonna find out soon enough.
